  • New Cinema Course this Spring: Arabic Cinema

    We are delighted to announce the new course ARIS 2200: ARABIC CINEMA, which will be offered in the Spring (Thursdays 4-7.20).

    There are no language requirements for this course, which is taught in English (all films are subtitled).

    The course is designed to introduce students to momentous issues in contemporary Arab society. It covers contemporary films from Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Palestine and Israel, Algeria, Tunis and Morocco. The topics covered include identity, gender, war and displacement, the Islamic heritage, terrorism, and the Arab-Israeli conflict. 

    The course will be taught by Prof. Nicola Carpentieri, the new chair of Arabic & Islamic Studies in the Dept. of Literatures, Languages and Cultures. 

    This course will count towards the upcoming Minor and Major in Arabic & Islamic Studies.
