  • Call for Proposals for Together:Confronting Racism

    CALL FOR PROPOSALS

In keeping with the UConn tradition of metanoia, the university community has designated Wednesday, November 8, 2017, as a day of reflection, learning, sharing, and transformation focused on confronting racism in our university, our state, and our nation. In our effort to provide opportunities for all parts of our community to work together in diverse ways to address this challenge, the steering committee is seeking proposals from any and all parts of the UConn nation.

While “Together: Confronting Racism” was authorized in response to the recent outbursts of violent white supremacy epitomized by the events in Charlottesville, a review of the history of metanoia at UConn reveals that the subject of race and racism is perennial. To us, this signals that racism is not a “problem” to be “solved,” but a fundamental part of our history and contemporary society for which we must take responsibility. This semester, we will once again attend to this basic fact of American life and we seek innovative and effective ways of addressing issues such as white supremacy, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, nativism, and colonialism.

Proposals are invited for workshops, dialogues, guest speakers, trainings, lessons, performances, and other initiatives for November 8 that address the theme of “Together: Confronting Racism” and engage members of the UConn community broadly conceived. Proposals seeking support for activities on dates later than November 8 will also be considered. Selected proposals will receive scheduling, logistical, and promotional support. Limited funding may be available.

    Proposals should include:
    1. Title
    2. Organizers (with affiliations)
    3. Participants or Intended Audience
    4. Description of Activity or Event (250-500 words)
    5. Requested Budget

Please submit proposals at together.uconn.edu/proposals due by October 25, 2017.
