For the 2017-2018 academic year, the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) will be changing its format for delivering Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training. Responsible Conduct of Research training is required by NSF, NIH and NIFA, and will be offered in January 2018. In order to reduce potential conflicts with class schedules, the training will occur just before the start of the spring semester. The RCR training will consist of two parts offered over the course of two days. Part 1 will be offered both the morning and the afternoon of Day 1. Part 2 will be offered both the morning and afternoon of Day 2. Both Part 1 and Part 2 must be completed to meet the requirements and will eliminate the need to complete the online CITI RCR modules. Exact days and times are to be determined. On-line registration will be opened in mid-October. The Health Center and some departments on the Storrs campus will continue to also offer a limited number of courses that meet the training requirements.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) requires responsible conduct of research (RCR) training for all undergraduates, graduates, and post-doctoral fellows who conduct research supported by NSF funds. Similarly, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) requires that all trainees, fellows, participants, and scholars receiving support through any NIH training, career development award (individual or institutional), research education grant, or dissertation research grant must receive RCR training. This requirement also applies to all faculty, including new faculty, mid-career faculty and senior faculty, and professional and scientific employees receiving funding from these sources. The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) also requires education in RCR for program directors, faculty, undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and any staff participating in research projects supported by an NIFA award.
