    Research Intensive Summer Experience (RISE)

We are recruiting bright, motivated, and creative students to participate in the 2017 Research Intensive Summer Experience (RISE) program. This internship-based program provides summer research assistants with the opportunity to learn about many aspects of the research process in a hands-on, immersive laboratory environment. There are 16 laboratories participating in RISE this year, spanning numerous departments and divisions (SLHS, COGS, PSYC, LING).

RISE scholars will be assigned to a specific laboratory and will receive close mentorship by faculty and graduate students. Specific research assignments will vary across laboratories, with RISE scholars collectively engaged in numerous aspects of research including recruiting participants, testing children and adults in behavioral and neuroimaging tasks, assisting in research with animal models, analyzing data, and interpreting results.  RISE scholars will also participate in guided readings of the relevant research literature and attend laboratory meetings.

Students will receive course credit for participation by registering in 3 credits of research-based independent study during the summer session (estimated tuition cost = $1400) and then completing 150 hours of laboratory experience (COGS 3589, SLHS 3299, PSYC 3889, or LING 3789). Students will set their own schedules, which are highly flexible. For example, a student may choose to complete their experience with full-time engagement for 4 weeks, or may choose instead to participate approximately 10 hours per week for 15 weeks.

To be considered, please complete the RISE 2017 inquiry form by Sunday, March 26, which is available on the RISE website (rise.uconn.edu). Questions regarding the RISE program can be directed to Dr. Rachel M. Theodore (rachel.theodore@uconn.edu). RISE is supported by the Cognitive Science Program and the CT Institute for the Brain and Cognitive Sciences.
