Library to phase out electronic course reserves in favor of direct linking by instructors

The library is transitioning from mediated electronic course reserves to a system that will require linking resources directly in HuskyCT by course instructors. The phasing out of this service affords faculty greater flexibility and control in the design and delivery of class materials. By following simple instructions, faculty will now be able to directly link to library materials from within HuskyCT, without having to submit a request with the library. The change will expedite student access to learning materials and allow the library to realize efficiencies. The transition will be completed by the Spring 2017 semester.

What does this mean for how you get your materials into HuskyCT? Instead of sending the information on electronic resources for your class to the library, you will locate the items within http://lib.uconn.edu and place links directly in your course page. The resources affected include e-journals, e-books, and music and video streams. The specific steps to locating those items and corresponding links depends on the type of material and we recommend you begin by looking at the series of instructional texts and videos linked from our webpage. Click for more information about the transition to unmediated electronic course reserves.

What about the materials you already have on reserve? Any electronic reserves you have this semester or have in the past that you would like to keep will need to be saved by you. To do this you will need to go into the current system and copy your reserves lists and any PDFs as soon as possible. We have great step-by-step videos on how to do this on our webpage.  Please note the materials you have stored in the current system will no longer be accessible after October 1, 2016.

What will not change is the process for placing physical materials such as books and DVDs on reserve. Also, as in the past, the Libraries’ Scan on Demand service will provide electronic copies of the library’s print holdings where appropriate.  Faculty need only submit their scanning requests via the interlibrary loan system, ILLIAD.  Staff will locate these materials and provide electronic copies of articles and chapters of books directly to faculty ILLIAD accounts.  Faculty may then post the readings to HuskyCT following fair use guidelines.  We have updated our copyright and fair use resource pages to help provide answers to questions of usage that may arise.

As always, we are available to answer any questions and to assist with this transition. Please contact Jo Ann Reynolds (860.486.1406) for further assistance.
