An Overview of SITES - A New Benchmarking System for Land Development at UConn

As part of its Building Excellence through Planning - Speaker Series, University Planning is pleased to present an overview of Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES) by Hunter Beckham FASLA, PLA, Senior Design Associate with Alta Planning + Design. SITES focuses on the critical need for a careful approach to land design and development using our ecosystem as the basis for sustainable landscape design.

Green building standards, such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), are a growing success story. As these statistics indicate, the practice of green building is becoming increasingly more mainstream and rating systems have created an incentive and means for recognition.

Despite the clear success of green building, there have been no national standards, until now, to guide those who want to create sustainable landscapes. The Sustainable SITES Initiative is the answer. It is a set of comprehensive, voluntary guidelines together with a rating system that assesses the sustainable design, construction, and maintenance of landscapes.
