Triggering Debate: Guns in the United States

    Wednesday, February 24th, 2016, 6:00pm

     Dodd Center Konover Auditorium
    Storrs, CT

The Leadership Legacy Experience at UConn is pleased to host a panel of esteemed experts and scholars to engage in a thoughtful, complex, and nuanced conversation on guns in America. Despite years of discussion on the local, state, and national level, the debate about gun rights and gun control rages on in the United States. Mass shootings by gunmen in civilian settings consistently reignite the debate, with advocates, policy-makers, politicians and the public squaring off in a contentious, emotional, and bitter war of words. With President Obama’s recent Executive Orders aimed at reducing gun violence, gun control policies and measures, Connecticut’s recent gun legislation, and a number of pending court cases, this event is an opportunity to explore the issue from multiple perspectives.

Our panelists are Saul Cornell, Professor of American History at Fordham University and the author of A Well Regulated Militia: The Founding Fathers and the Origins of Gun Control in America as well as Stephen Halbrook, Attorney-at-Law and author of The Founder’s Second Amendment: Origins of the Right to Bear Arms. Our panel Moderator is Richard Kay, Associate Dean and Professor of Law at UConn Law, and is a leading scholar on constitutional interpretation.

Admission to this event is free.  All members of the community are welcome to attend.
