  • Why I Give to CSEC: Terri Dominguez

For those of us at the Storrs campus it is easier than ever to take part in this year's Connecticut State Employees Giving Campaign, because you can do it entirely online at https://www.givingmatters365.org/_ctemployeegiving/. If you prefer the old-fashioned way, simply follow the link to the print donation form and fax your form to Paula Enderle at 860-486-0379 or email it to paula.enderle@uconn.edu.

Since the campaign began in October, we’ve been asking some employees who’ve routinely given to their favorite charities this way to tell us why they give and how they decide which charities to give to. We will continue to share their stories with you periodically here and at http://csec.uconn.edu. Here’s what Terri Dominguez, MSPH, CSP, Interim Director of the Division of Environmental Health and Safety in the Office of the Vice President for Research in Storrs told us:

Why I Give to CSEC: Terri Dominguez

I’ve been involved for all the years I’ve worked at UConn and this is my 23rd year!

I give through the CSEC program for a few reasons. I like giving through payroll deduction, because of the convenience and the satisfaction of knowing that small, regular deductions amount to a greater impact over the course of the year.

With the vast number of charities out there, I’m happy to have the directory as a resource to peruse to find charities that speak to me in a special way. It’s also comforting to know that the charities are reputable, having been vetted to ensure that they meet certain guidelines, including keeping their administrative costs below 25% to maximize their direct impact on the causes they serve.

I think we all get bombarded with charity mailings, especially at this time of year, and it’s nice to use that as a tool to help make the best choice possible.

I tend to distribute my contributions to two or three organizations that speak to me. I usually give to relief organizations, such as the American Red Cross or Catholic Relief Services; sustainable charities to fight hunger, such as ECHO; or I make memorial contributions on behalf of friends and family to organizations like the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

It’s so easy and straightforward, particularly now with the new online system — you just check some boxes and it’s a done deal.
