  • EWB Irrigation Project in Ethiopia Approved

The UConn chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB-USA, UConn) is excited to announce that as of November 4th, it has have been approved to assist an impoverished farming community in Ethiopia by designing and implementing an irrigation system.

EWB is a club on campus that partners with communities in need to create sustainable engineering projects that empower communities to meet their basic human needs. The club is working with the Civil and Environmental Engineering department to plan the large-scale irrigation project. This irrigation system will extend the length and improve the quality of the growing season for the benefit of the more than 1000 households in the Abba Samuel River Watershed, Ethiopia.

This project is funded significantly by the gracious donations of United Technologies Research Center (UTRC). UTRC’s recent donation of $5575 will allow University of Connecticut students to travel to Ethiopia this coming January. This trip serves as a preliminary observation of the sites and to prepare for the coming implementation trips. The team aims to develop stronger ties with the community and to personally show that UConn students are committed to helping the community for years to come while collecting data on the region to develop and generate a plan for the irrigation system.
