While many scientists and other world leaders may be in agreement, the climate change debate is still raging in the United States. At the center of this conversation, the Environmental Defense Fund has been working with business and industry partners to study the impact of natural gas, shale gas, and fracking. Join us for a discussion on unconventional gas and oil, including its impact on the economy and environment and its overall influence on the energy landscape of the future. The Leadership Legacy Experience at UConn is pleased to host EDF’s Chief Scientist, Steve Hamburg, as he discusses his efforts to link industry, science, and policy in order to find practical and lasting solutions to the most serious environmental problems.
Dr. Steven Hamburg is chief scientist of the Environmental Defense Fund and is an ecosystem ecologist involved in biogeochemistry/forest ecology research for more than 25 years. Hamburg is EDF’s public voice for its commitment to science-based advocacy and is responsible for the scientific integrity of EDF’s positions and programs. He has served as an advisor to both corporations and non-governmental organizations and was awarded an Environmental Merit award by the US Environmental Protection Agency for his climate change-related activities. Hamburg has published 100 scientific papers on biogeochemistry, climate change impacts on forests and carbon accounting approaches and methodologies and has served as a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). His involvement with the IPCC resulted in his being acknowledged as one of the contributing recipients of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.
