The Beinecke Scholarship is a graduate scholarship awarded to applicants in their junior year of college. Candidates should aspire to enter a master’s or doctoral program in the arts, humanities or social sciences after they complete their undergraduate degree. (The award is not intended to fund students planning to acquire professional degrees in law, education, architecture, or business that emphasize practical analysis over theory and research). In addition to strong academic merit, candidates should also demonstrate financial need (by having qualified for need-based financial aid as an undergraduate).
The University of Connecticut is proud to be one of the 100+ institutions invited to nominate ONE candidate to compete at the national level for this prestigious award. A Beinecke Scholar receives $30,000 to fund his or her graduate education as well as an additional $4,000 immediately to offset the costs associated with applying to graduate school, including travel.

To be considered for nomination, a student must submit to the Office of National Scholarships & Fellowships, the following materials by the campus deadline: February 3, 2016
* A current resume
* A 1,000 word personal statement describing his or her background, interests, plans for graduate study and career aspirations. The statement should include a discussion of some experiences and ideas that have shaped those interests, plans and aspirations.
*At least 2 letters of recommendation from faculty members that assess the candidate’s intellectual curiosity, character and potential for advanced graduate study (if selected as UConn’s nominee, the candidate would be required to secure a third letter of recommendation by the national deadline)
*A transcript (unofficial ok; if nominated, the candidate would need to submit an official transcript)
