UConn is a diverse community with students and teachers from many different cultural backgrounds, so we would like to address the challenges and issues that TAs face when working with a heterogeneous group of students. Therefore, the graduate student association from the Literatures, Cultures and Languages Department, with support from GSS, is hosting a pedagogy workshop aimed at TAs from all disciplines and departments.
Questions the workshop plans to address:
- How do I engage students from cultures in which it is not common to speak up in class and express one's one opinion into critical classroom discussions?
- How do I grade fairly, when some of my international students are very skilled and knowledgeable, but are not able to express themselves due to linguistic challenges (non-native speakers of English)?
- How can I adjust my teaching style to cater to a culturally diverse student population? Should I?
- How do I integrate culturally different views and beliefs about the content area of a class, some which might not match or even oppose the views traditionally taught in the class / in the US?
- Which resources on campus might help?
The pedagogy workshop is going to be held on
Thursday, April 2 from 2-3.30 pm in Oak Hall 236
Discussion will be led by
Prof. Manuela Wagner (LCL) and
Prof. John Zach (Education),
whose expertise focuses on inter-cultural challenges and competence in teaching.
Light refreshments will be served.
