Bio: Jocelyn Viterna is Associate Professor of Sociology and co-director of the Transnational Studies Initiative at Harvard University.  Her research explores how gender shapes the evolving relationship between the state and civil society, especially in countries transitioning to democracy.  Her region of emphasis is Latin America, and her award-winning book, Women in War: The Micro-Processes of Mobilization in El Salvador was published in 2013 by the Oxford University Press. Currently, Viterna is forwarding two new research agendas.  The first investigates the causes and consequences of the recent deterioration of women’s reproductive rights in Latin America; the second investigates the complex relationship between NGOs, social mobilization, and development in the Global South.
