2015 DAY OF REMEMBRANCE Public Lecture
“Beyond Internment: Asian Americans and the Quest for Justice”
DARYL JOJI MAEDA (University of Colorado, Boulder)
Speaker Bio: Daryl Maeda is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Ethnic Studies. Professor Maeda also represents the South and Interior West region on the Board of the Association of Asian American Studies and serves on the editorial board of the Justice, Power, and Politics Series published by the University of North Carolina Press. A scholar of social movements for justice by people of color, he has two books on the Asian American movement – Chains of Babylon: The Rise of Asian America (Univ. of Minnesota Press, 2009) and Rethinking the Asian American Movement (Routledge, 2012). He is currently at work on the transpacific movement of culture, aesthetics, and martial arts in the 1960s and 1970s by studying the figure of Bruce Lee.
This event is free and open to the public, and sponsored by the Asian and Asian American Studies Institute in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Asian American Cultural Center at the University of Connecticut.

After years of community education and organizing that led to a bipartisan commission’s recommendations, the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 authorized an apology and reparations to all living claimants. By then most of those most harmed by the internment camps had already passed away.
