Scholarly Colloquia and Events

  • 2/21 MCB Faculty Search Seminar

Please join us Tuesday, February 21, in person, 3:30 pm, BPB 131 for an MCB Faculty Search Seminar hosted by Dr. Ken Campellone

Refreshments will be served at 3:15 in the BPB lobby

Our speaker will be Ning Wang, PhD., Research Associate, HHMI, Harvard Medical School

“Role of membrane-curvature generating proteins in organelle biogenesis”

Summary: All cellular organelles have characteristic shapes, but how their morphology is generated is largely unknown. Here I show that the conserved ER-shaping REEP proteins (REEP5 proteins) use a novel mechanism involving the formation of a “splayed dimer” to induce extreme membrane curvature in support of ER tubule formation, while the other subclass of REEP proteins (REEP1 proteins) play a fundamental role in autophagosome formation during autophagy.

Bio: Dr. Wang received her Ph.D. degree from the Department of Molecular Genetics at the Ohio State University, where she studied cytokinesis using fission yeast S. pombe as the model organism. From 2016 until now, she has been a postdoctoral fellow in the Dr. Tom Rapoport lab at Harvard Medical School studying organelle homeostasis with a primary focus on the membrane-curvature generation during organelle biogenesis.
