International Student Information

  • Tax Filing Information for International Students

It is hard to believe we are already two weeks into 2023!  This means international students and scholars should review information on tax filing in the U.S. as it will soon be time to file your 2022 tax forms.

All non-resident aliens for tax purposes need to fill out at least one form for the IRS (Form 8843), even if you did not work or earn taxable income in the U.S.! If you arrived in the U.S. before 1/1/2023 you will need to file this form for 2022.  If you arrived in the U.S. after 1/1/2023 you do not need to file form 8843 until next year.

Students and scholars that did work or received a taxable scholarship or fellowship may additionally need to file a 2022 U.S. and a CT tax return by April 18, 2023.  Tax returns need to be filed between February and April 18.  ISSS will share more information about how you can file your taxes either by participating in a free UConn VITA workshop or by using Sprintax software with a free code from ISSS.

Review the general tax information for international students and scholars here, including tax documents, tax treaties, income tax filing and more.  ISSS will share more information with you about VITA workshops as soon as appointments become available and Sprintax codes once they become available to students.
