  • Language Consultant, Field Methods in Linguistics

The UConn Linguistics Department seeks to hire a native speaker of an understudied language to assist in the Spring 2023 course, LING 6050: Field Methods in Linguistics. Students in this class describe and analyze an unfamiliar language based on eliciting linguistic data from the consultant, primarily through translation questions. The consultant must attend all class meetings (in person and/or remotely) on Wednesdays 1:30-4:30pm EST and additional small group sessions of 5-7 hours per week to be arranged at times compatible with the consultants' availability. The expecation is a workload of around 10-12 hours per week depending on enrollment size. The pay rate is $28.80 per hour. The job will begin the week of January 16th and run through early May with the possibility of some future continuation based on the students' projects.

The position requires no prior experience and does not involve teaching. Native fluency in an unfamiliar language and excellent English proficiency are the only required qualifications.

Interested parties would contact Dr. Vicki Carstens:  vicki.carstens@uconn.edu, ASAP. The consultant must be a U.S. citizen or hold a visa permitting them to work legally in the U.S. Speakers of African languages are especially encouraged to apply.
