  • Researcher Wanted-Children w/ Incarcerated Parents

    RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES!

UConn School of Public Policy’s Institute for Municipal and Regional Policy has funding to support research. The Institute’s Children with Incarcerated Parents Initiative is looking for Principal Investigators to perform research that will contribute to the understanding of how parental incarceration impacts Connecticut children, their incarcerated parents and caregivers. The Initiative is open to considering research proposed by faculty, in addition to the topic areas below.

    1. How the 1997 Adoption and Safe Families Act (ASFA) impacts Connecticut children with incarcerated parents.
    2. How the installation of a playground at York Correctional Institution (the state’s only female prison) impacts children with incarcerated mothers, incarcerated moms, and correctional officers who supervise visits. Playground installation is expected in late 2022.
    3. How the sudden prohibition of in-person visits due to COVID impacted children and their incarcerated parent(s).
      1. The mental health and wellbeing impact of the newly established specialized unit within York Correctional Institution for expecting mothers.
      2. A needs assessment for children with incarcerated parents in Connecticut.

The Initiative is also interested in exploring legal issues surrounding the rights of children with incarcerated parents, and their incarcerated parent(s) in their role as parents.

For each proposal, please submit a budget. We have an estimated $45,000 available to support research this fiscal year. Multi-year projects will be considered, as well.

Please send proposals to CTCIP@uconn.edu. Although the opportunity may be on-going, we request proposals to be submitted by October 31, 2022.
