Research Studies Seeking Participants

  • Study on Financial Decision Making in Older Adults

Seeking Older Adults to Participate in a Study on Financial Decision Making

Older adults lost almost $1.7 billion in financial scams in 2021. Better understanding of financial decision making in older adults is necessary in order to help seniors avoid fraud. The purpose of this research is to understand the cognitive, emotional, and motivational components of financial decision making in older adults. We are recruiting men and women age 60+ to participate in the current study. Participants may either have depression or be free of depression in order to participate.

     Participation involves:

    • 3 in-person appointments over one year. Each visit lasts 3-4 hours and can be split into separate sessions at your convenience.
    • 10-15 minutes of questionnaires completed at home once a month
    • Interviews and evaluations
    • Testing of thinking & memory and financial decision making. You will answer questions about your mood and mental health and complete tests of your financial knowledge and performance (e.g., asked to simulate writing out a check to pay a bill). You will also take computerized tests of thinking and memory (e.g., playing a game where you must decide between an easy or more challenging task in order to win money).
    • Provide blood samples
    • No cost for participation

Payment to participants includes $50 at completion of the in-person assessments and an additional $30 if you complete the monthly assessments at least 10 times for a total of up to $180 for the 1-year study.
