Abstract: My program of research examines the fundamental building blocks of early cognitive processes. Our work combines neuroscience and biopsychological perspectives to investigate learning and memory, executive functions, and social action perception. In this presentation, I will introduce the behavioral techniques we use to assess learning/memory and executive processes during infancy. Characteristics of infant memory will be discussed, with a focus on experimental investigations of associative networks and memory potentiation. Our findings reveal potential underlying mechanisms for increasing transfer of learning beyond encoding-specific conditions as well as protracting relatively brief memories. Furthermore, a fundamental question for developmental scientists is how to characterize neural processing during early development and identify potential neural markers linked with optimal outcomes. I will provide an overview of the use of EEG to assess neural oscillatory rhythms during infancy. Our longitudinal work has primarily focused on the 6-9 Hz “infant alpha/mu” rhythm in the context of executive and action perception processing. I will discuss evidence of concurrent and longitudinal links between individual differences in EEG oscillatory activity and cognitive processes, while also highlighting limitations of current approaches and future directions for the field.
