She completed post-doctoral fellowships at Yale University and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has developed innovative teaching strategies as a Macy Faculty Scholar using examples from her internationally recognized research program, which focuses on enhancing self and family management of sickle cell disease. She was drawn to this research area due to the disparities and inequities in care, particularly pain management, fueled by social and structural determinants of health.
