Title of Talk: Investigating the microbiome of the upside-down jellyfish, Cassiopea xamachana, at a small liberal arts college
Summary: The lifecycle of the upside-down jellyfish is driven by symbiosis, but little is known about the bacterial community associated with this cnidarian. I will discuss my research into the Cassiopea xamachana microbiome, and also provide a glance into life at a small liberal arts college.
After completing her undergraduate degree at Smith College, Dr. Kerwin worked as a laboratory technician at the American Museum of Natural History and then the USDA for several years. She completed her Master’s in Marine Biology at Northeastern before coming to UConn for her Ph.D. with Spencer Nyholm. She went on to do a post-doc with Dr. Mónica Medina at Penn State on coral and jellyfish microbiomes and then accepted a position as assistant professor at a small liberal arts college in Maryland, McDaniel College.
