“The History and Future of Conservation”

Please join us for the first virtual Teale lecture of the Fall 2021 semester, to be streamed live on Thursday, September 30 at 4:00pm EST.

Nijhuis describes herself as a “lapsed biologist,” using her scientific expertise to write compelling stories focused on conservation and global change. Her book, Beloved Beasts: Fighting for Life in an Age of Extinction (March 2021), which tracks the history of conservation movements from efforts to protect single species to current preservation efforts at a broad macroecological scale.

As a Project Editor at The Atlantic, Nijhuis edits features in the Life Up Close series, which is supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Department of Science Education, and covers topics relevant to field ecology, conservation biology, and life in the Anthropocene. Her work has also appeared in the New York Times Magazine and National Geographic. Not only does Nijhuis write prolifically and accessibly about science, but she also guides others in her craft: Nijhuis authored The Science Writers’ Essay Handbook: How to Craft Compelling True Stories in Any Medium and co-authored The Science Writers’ Handbook: Everything You Need to Know to Pitch, Publish and Prosper in the Digital Age.

Nihjuis’ work has been honored with numerous awards, including two AAAS/Kavli Science Journalism Awards, the Sierra Club’s Rachel Carson Award, and the Walter Sullivan Award for Excellence in Science Journalism. Her writing has also been included in four Best American anthologies. Her research has been supported by the Alicia Patterson Foundation, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, and the Food and Environment Reporting Network.

This WebEx event is open to the public and viewers may submit questions via chat during the live program.
