    May is Stroke Awareness Month

May is American Stroke Awareness month and so it’s a great time to learn and share what you can do to prevent a stroke. What is a stroke? A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. Brain cells begin to die in minutes. In the United States, someone has a stroke every 40 seconds and every 4 minutes, someone dies of stroke. Every year, more than 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke.

May’s WELCOA Health Bulletin highlights facts surrounding strokes, stroke prevention strategies, and how to recognize signs of a stroke.

To access the WELCOA Health Bulletin – “Practical Strategies to Prevent a Stroke” as well as other health and safety topics such as “Simple Ways to Manage Stress in Your Life, How to Build Better Bonds With Your Kids, and What to Do if You are a Victim of Domestic Abuse”, visit https://hr.uconn.edu/worklife/ and click "WELCOA Health Bulletins" under QUICK LINKS.
