QUAN TRAN, Vice Provost for Diversity Pre-Doctoral Fellow, Yale University

"Remembering the Vietnamese Boat People Exodus: Rethinking Refugee Identity and Community Formation"

In the two decades after the Vietnam War ended in April 1975, over one million people fled from the newly formed Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Popularly known as “boat people,” their exodus captured international attention and formed a new Vietnamese diaspora across the world. This talk examines the significance of this dramatic and global migration by attending to former boat refugees’ contemporary efforts to memorialize their exodus to less familiar sites, such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Germany.
