Scholarly Colloquia and Events

  • 2/12 Robert Thorson, Earth Science/EEB:"Walden's Shore"

Robert Thorson, Professor of geology, to talk on his new book, Walden's Shore (Harvard UP, 2014) on Wednesday, Feb. 12, from 1:00 to 3:00 in the Stern Lounge (Austin 217). All are welcome for a lively presentation of Thorson's key ideas, with illuminating images and good give-and-take.

Thorson is the author of books on New England's stone walls (among them Stone by Stone) and co-instructor with faculty from History, Art, and English, of the exciting freshman honors course, "Walden: A History." His most recent book, Walden's Shore: Henry David Thoreau and Nineteenth-Century Science, is a tour-de-force of interdisciplinary scholarship. It takes Thoreau's interest in science seriously--and thereby helps us read Walden in stunningly new ways.
