    Dear UConn Community,

UConn's American English Language Institute (UCAELI) will be offering a Language Support Course: Oral Communication/Presentation Skills in Spring 2021. Language Support courses are designed for international UConn students who have at least an intermediate level of English proficiency. Courses meet twice a week for a total of 3 hours for 6 weeks. These courses are open to any active UConn student with a Peoplesoft number including: UCAELI Students, Graduate students, Undergraduates, and Non-Credit.

Important Note for Students: If you are looking to be a TA for Summer or Fall of 2021, you may want to consider taking this course. Taking a language support course can fulfill the requirements for Microteaching Testing eligibility.

    Oral Communication/Presentation Skills

    • Days: Monday/Wednesday
    • Dates: January 25 – March 3 (6 weeks)
    • Time: 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM
    • Fee: $250
    • Location: Online

This course will help participants develop oral skills necessary for academic success as a student, instructor, or presenter, as well as discussion and conversation skills necessary for every day communication. In the first session, participants will work on identifying problem areas and setting goals. The specific contents will then be determined based on the group’s needs and interests, but usually will include an overview of American English pronunciation, characteristics of effective presentations, expectations of American academic audiences, and aspects of cross-cultural communication. Participants will work on a variety of strategies to evaluate and develop their language and presentation skills. Participants will leave with a plan for continuing improvement beyond the course.
