  • GA Openings in Writing Center -- Apply by 3/6

    The Writing Center is now accepting applications for following graduate assistantships for the 2020-21 academic year. Both offer rich apprenticeships in academic program administration. The faculty directors actively mentor GAs in professional development and research, and the 25 undergraduate and graduate tutors on staff form a vibrant, interdisciplinary community.
     

    Assistant Director | Full Assistantship (20 hours/week)

    Assistantship start date: August 2020 (with the possibility of additional paid summer work to get oriented)

    The Assistant Director is involved in all aspects of writing center administration, serving on a leadership team that includes faculty (Tom Deans and Kathleen Tonry), a program administrator, and a fellow graduate Assistant Director. Duties include recruiting, training, and mentoring tutors; participating in weekly team meetings; managing Writing Center partnerships across campus; conducting research; and handling other duties as assigned by the faculty directors. While the position is mainly administrative, Assistant Directors also do regular one-on-one tutoring. Successful candidates must have a commitment to undergraduate education, cross-disciplinary collaboration, peer tutoring, and the intellectual work of teaching of writing. They should also be capable and creative project managers. Writing center experience preferred. Past Assistant Directors have found their Writing Center experiences pivotal to later securing faculty and administrative positions.

     

    Graduate Writing Support Coordinator | Full Assistantship (20 hours/week)

    Assistantship start date: August 2020 (with the possibility of additional paid summer work to get oriented)

    Part of our core administrative team, the GWSC leads efforts to support graduate student writers across campus. Duties include doing individualized tutoring; organizing writing retreats and dissertation bootcamps; teaching three 5-week, ungraded seminars in academic writing per year; and serving as the Writing Center’s liaison to various constituencies on campus. Successful candidates will be strong teachers and organized project managers; they must also have a commitment to working across disciplines, languages, and cultures. Open to doctoral students from any department. Writing center experience is a plus. Past Graduate Writing Coordinators have found their Writing Center experiences pivotal to later securing faculty and administrative positions.

     

    Application deadline is March 6, 2020 at midnight. Applicants from all UConn departments are invited to apply (past Writing Center GAs have come from English, EEB, Linguistics, LCL, Sociology, Philosophy, Political Science, Education, Psychology, Communication Sciences, and Natural Resources & the Environment). International graduate students are likewise invited to apply.
