  • Passing of UConn Student Tianyin (Skyine) Shang

    It is with great sadness that we share with you the passing of one of our students. Tianyin (Skyine) Shang a junior from Shanghai, China studying Applied Mathematical Sciences passed away on January 20, 2020.

    Skyine was a very involved student during her time at UConn. She was a member of UConntabile, the University treble choir, the Chinese Actuarial Club, the Western Equestrian Team and on the 2019 Worldfest planning team. As part of the Worldfest planning committee, she looked forward to raising international inclusiveness and getting students involved in learning about other traditions.

    The University community grieves the loss of a valued member and we write today to remind you of the resources available on campus. Students who are in need of additional support should be referred to the offices below:  

    Student Health & Wellness - Mental Health Services is available to provide support to the Storrs campus community at this time of loss.  Mental Health Services is located on the 4th floor of Arjona and their office hours are from 8:30am - 4:30pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and from 10:30am-4:30pm on Wednesdays.  Students identified as needing support should be encouraged to either walk in during office hours or call 860-486-4705 to make an appointment. There is also a counselor on-call after hours who can be reached by calling 860-486-4705.  In addition, information about dealing with grief is located on the Mental Health Services website at http://counseling.uconn.edu/dealing-with-grief/

    The Dean of Students Office located on the 2nd floor of Wilbur Cross is available to assist students struggling with the loss of their classmate. You may make an appointment by calling 860-486-3426 or stop in to meet with a staff member during business hours Monday – Friday from 8:00am-5:00pm.

    Finally, in addition to the sadness of this immediate incident, we are aware that tragedy may trigger our own personal histories of loss and grief. Staff and faculty in need of support for themselves are encouraged to support one another.
