Research, Funding, and Awards

  • Notice to Investigators on Revised Common Rule

    Dear Investigators,

As you are aware, the revised Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects ('Common Rule') went into effect on January 21, 2019. During the last year, all federally funded studies transitioned as required to meet the updated regulations. During the next year, all remaining non-federally funded studies must transition to the revised Common Rule.  This includes all researcher out-of-pocket, PI Department and “unfunded” protocols.

    What to Expect

    • New studies – All new applications, regardless of funding source, submitted on or after January 21, 2019 must use the current consent template and include an Initial Review Checklist.
    • Existing studies, regardless of funding type – All non-federally funded studies will transition to the Revised Common Rule at the time of Annual Continuation.  All studies must transition by February 2021. This will require completion of the Continuation/Transition Checklist, and may require updated consent documents using the consent template as determined by the Continuation/Transition Checklist.

If you have additional questions regarding the revised regulations and what, if any, action is needed on your part, please contact an IRB Staff member:
