This seminar will provide an overview of three successful programs involving applied land use data collection and community engagement strategies as part of UConn Extension’s Community & Economic Development Programs. The Connecticut Trail Census https://cttrailcensus.uconn.edu/  is a volunteer based data collection program on bicycle and pedestrian trails that now includes over 20 communities across the state and has involved hundreds of volunteers and led to several research initiatives.  The First Impressions Program https://communities.extension.uconn.edu/firstimpressions/

is a “secret-shopper” type community assessment program which pairs communities and allows them to assess various physical characteristics, and the Best Practices in Land Use and Economic Development program https://www.cedas.org/Resources/CT-Best-Practices-In-Land-Use-and-Economic-Development/ certifies communities who meet criteria in good land use practice to support community based economic development.  The seminar will provide a discussion of lessons learned from these programs and open discussion about how universities can support sustainable development.

*This is the last seminar of the PSLA 2019 Fall Seminar Series
