  • 5/16 Ethics Workshop for Social Media Research

The UConn Center for mHealth and Social Media is hosting its 3rd annual conference, Social Media and Health, on May 16. Speakers include national experts in social media research on topics such as health promotion interventions, observational research, research ethics, public health campaigns, online patient communities and more. An exciting day of speakers and panels will be followed by a poster session complete with wine, appetizers, and professional networking.

In addition, the Center will be offering a pre-conference workshop about Ethics and IRB in Social Media Research.

This workshop will review social and ethical considerations in social media research as relevant to both observational and intervention studies. Guidance will be provided in terms of preparing IRB applications, communicating with IRB, providing informed consent, accessing and presenting data, and understanding and communicating the privacy policies and terms of service of various commercial social media platforms. Case examples that illustrate social and ethical quandaries will be discussed. Participants will receive a packet of resources to use as a reference guide for their future social media research.
