Scholarly Colloquia and Events

  • 4/17 Psych Colloquium: Dr. Hal Blumenfeld

The next psychology colloquium is scheduled for Wednesday - April 17th at 3:30pm in BOUS A106

Dr. Hal Blumenfeld from Yale University will be presenting his talk titled "Consciousness and Epilepsy". We hope that you will join us!

Abstract: Consciousness is of fundamental importance to quality of life, yet the detailed mechanisms of normal and impaired consciousness are not known. Combining data from normal perceptual tasks and impaired states such as epilepsy may provide important new insights into mechanisms of consciousness. During normal conscious perception of visual stimuli, we found the following sequence of steps in cortical- subcortical networks based on EEG and fMRI measurements: detect, pulse, switch and wave. When consciousness is transiently lost in epileptic seizures, we found that the same networks are disrupted through long-range signal changes. Deep brain stimulation of subcortical arousal systems has potential to improve consciousness when seizures cannot be stopped by other treatments.

The remaining colloquium scheduled is listed below. All talks will take place in BOUS A106 at 3:30pm on Wednesday’s unless otherwise noted.
