  • 4/6 Women in STEM - Present to Girls at Event at SCSU

Join as a presenter at a STEM event on April 6 at SCSU.  We are looking for a variety of women with cool STEM careers who may be interested in presenting at this event. This is a middle/high school girl audience so presenters can make it fun and interactive, take about career journey and some aspect of what they do (maybe a primer on their particular field). The goal is to introduce various avenues of STEM fields to pursue and how they should go about getting into these areas and what careers/courses they can acquire to get there. PPT presentations, videos welcome as well as other cool exhibits, etc.

Send your interest in presenting preferably by Friday, March 22 to

    MORE DETAILS:

Young Women in Bio (YWIB), a nonprofit organization with 13 chapters across the U.S. and Canada, is organizing its first ever Young Women in Bio local event in Connecticut as part of a national Spring Into STEM™ Festival event and we are looking for participants, presenters and sponsors! This event is free for participants.

Now in its third year, YWIB’s annual Spring Into STEM™ Festival is a series of STEM-focused events across the country and in Montreal for young girls to explore the wide range of educational and career opportunities open to them in STEM.  From the first day of spring in March through the beginning of May, participating chapters of YWIB reached out to middle school and high school girls by hosting a wide range of events and activities, including tours of companies, panel discussions and participation at major STEM Festivals.

Southern Connecticut State University has graciously agreed to host this inaugural event and we are now looking for presenters, sponsors and volunteers! YWIB will be posting a registration link for participants on the YWIB page and promoting the event throughout Connecticut via social media and flyers.

    Event Details

    Date: Saturday, April 6

    Time: Approximately 9:30am – 2:15pm

Age Range: Middle and high school girls

    Participant Number: 100 girls

Presenters: Looking for a range of STEM representation and about 10-20 presenters total

All YWIB events are free to participants!

Presenters: We are looking for a variety of STEM company representatives or experts who can present a short, engaging presentation (appx. 20-30 min total allowing time for questions), that will engage our young girls and give them an idea of a related project, experience or the type of career opportunities that await them in that particular STEM field. By providing some cool aspect of your work, some courses that might help them prepare, your career journey and other insights will be particularly useful. Presenters can opt to have a display table or not. Depending on the number of presenters you may be asked to present more than once. If you have a hands-on experiment for the kids to work on, we can allocate your presentation to one of two conference rooms or the laboratory space. Participation will be on a first come, first served but also take into account the need to have a diversified agenda.

Meeting space: We will have access to two presentation rooms (class room style holding 55 seats each), one lab space holding 16 spaces, two smaller presentation rooms, and space in the hallway, reception area for table displays for your company to provide more info on your company and STEM area. We hope to move people to one of two conference rooms and presentation spaces where presenters will rotate. There will be opportunities for breaks and networking.

Participants: If you know of any girls who would be interested, please have them register (and fill out necessary registration forms/photo releases) here: https://www.womeninbio.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1214067&group=

Volunteers: We will need a handful of people to help with registration, food distribution, on site organization, taking pictures, directing traffic, ensuring release forms/photo releases are filled out, etc.

Event Flow: The details are still under development and will formalize depending on the number of presenters who participate. We are planning to provide welcoming remarks at the beginning of the event in the main meeting area/lobby/registration space and then move attendees to presentation or laboratory spaces where they will stay for several presentations. There will be an opportunity to move between presentations. Presenters will be given a schedule and can move to presentation space when it’s their turn and then return to table display and/or circulate. If you host a table display, we would prefer you commit for maintaining the display for the duration of the event.

    * SCSU will be hosting a Discovery Day for prospective high school students from 2:00 p.m. until 5:15 p.m. so attendees can participate in both activities.

For consideration, please let us know of your interest as early as possible but no later than Friday, March 22.

Event organizer: For more information please reach out to Maggie Tobin (Hmtobin1298@gmail.com; M. 646-418-6306)

We will host a participant webinar(s) the week of March 25 and provide more details about the flow.

Until then please let us know if you are interested in participating as a sponsor, presenter, volunteer, or all of the above and any questions you may have. Many thanks for your consideration.

    Best,

    Maggie Tobin
