    Dacia Maraini: "Women Writers, from Mystics to Courtesans"

    Novelist, playwright and poet, Dacia Maraini is an historic figure of Italian literature and feminism. She is the winner of multiple prestigious literary awards, including the Premio Strega in 1999 for her short story collection Buio (Darkness). In her long and distinguished career she has published over 20 novels, numerous plays and collections of short stories, and collaborated on screenplays and films. Her works have been translated into many languages and performed around the world. Her most famous novel, The Silent Duchess (La lunga vita di Marianna Ucria, 1990) was adapted into a major motion picture in 1997. A social activist for most of her life, Maraini currently writes a weekly editorial for the major Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera on topics of politics and human rights.

    This event is proudly presented by the Italian Literary and Cultural Studies program and the Department of Literatures, Cultures & Languages, and is co-sponsored by the Comparative Literature & Cultural Studies program, the Creative Writing program, the History Department and the Human Rights Institute.
