    The Department of Nursing is accepting applications for the 2018 Herrick Drake Award.

    The Herrick Drake Scholarship Fund was established in 1984 from donations in memory of Herrick Drake, who experienced an unexpected cardiac arrest. Mr. Drake's wife, Judith, and other family members wished to acknowledge the efforts and contributions of nurses in the care of patients with cardiac disease. The Fund has now matured and is ready to be utilized for scholarship awards. Purpose: The Herrick Drake Fund Scholarship will be used to support individual nurses' continuing education activities, with preference given to nurses studying cardiac-related topics. Attendance at Regional/National Conferences will be encouraged.

    Criteria for Application:

    • Clinical Nurse II, Clinical Nurse III or Clinical Nurse IV in UConn Health John Dempsey Hospital Department of Nursing.

    • Letter of support from the Nursing Manager of your unit.

    • Demonstrated contribution to quality patient care through clinical activities related to cardiac care.

    • Completed application (including description of educational program to be attended and anticipated expenses). Preference will be given to cardiac-related topics.

    Scholarship Funding and Requirements:

    • Approximately $1000.00 in scholarship monies will be available in 2018.

    • Applications with expenses ranging from $250 - $1000 will be considered. More than one scholarship may be awarded annually.

    • Funds awarded must be utilized within one year.

    • Upon completion of educational program, documentation of attendance must be submitted along with a description of how information obtained at the educational program will be shared with nursing colleagues to enhance the quality of patient care must be included.
