Seminar Title: “Crisis in biomedical sciences; time for reform?"

After a period of dizzying progress in the mid-to-late 20th century the biomedical revolution has encountered a variety of problems in the 21st century. These range from questions about the reproducibility of major studies to a reward system that is based more on the impact of publications than on scientific rigor and importance.   In parallel with these concerns the biomedical fields are experiencing an epidemic of retractions from the literature, most of which are due to misconduct.  There is some evidence that innovation in the biomedical sciences is slowing down, which may reflect factors including problems within the scientific enterprise.  This seminar will call for fundamental reforms ranging from changes to economic system of science to better education for scientists.  There are signs that such reforms are beginning to occur providing optimism for the future.
