Title: “Utilizing electronic health records for genome-wide association studies with the GERA cohort”
Abstract: We designed genome-wide association arrays and genotyped 100,000 Kaiser Permanente health plan members in the multi-ethnic Genetic Epidemiology Research on Adult Health and Aging (GERA) cohort. Linking these to longitudinal electronic health records (EHRs) of various quantitative phenotypes (e.g., lab tests and vital signs, after being properly curated) has allowed us to identify many novel loci associated with these traits. There are additional challenges to obtaining richer phenotype data from EHRs. Having a large single cohort also allowed us to assess genetic dominance and epistasis effects; sex differences in genetic impact; differences amongst race/ethnicity groups; and other analysis.
