Great American Smokeout At UConn Health

Sponsored by the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Wellness and Smoking Cessation Program

    Thursday November 17th, 2016

    3-5pm Onyiuke Dining Room

Patients, students, faculty, and staff are all invited to the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout!

Come and meet UConn Health’s Smoking Cessation provider, Diahann Wilcox, APRN and learn about the services offered, tips on how to quit smoking, and other resources.

Celebrate with former smokers and those who are attempting to quit with a group photo at 4:30pm. Light refreshments will be served. Registration is not required.

There’s strength in numbers. When trying to quit smoking, support can make all the difference.

    Quit Tips of the Week

Step 4: Get help from family, friends, and coworkers

    • Tell friends and family you intend to quit and ask them for help.

      • Will you need them to distract you?

      • Do you prefer not to be asked how you are doing?

      • Ask other smokers you know to quit with you

      • Ask other smokers not to smoke around you, and not to offer you a cigarette, even if you ask for one.

    Step 5: Anticipate challenges

    • Use a smoking tracker such as the one found here to understand your smoking triggers.

      • Record each cigarette you smoke for one week in the smoking tracker.

        • Do you smoke in the car? On the phone? When you are mad, stressed, or anxious?

        • Use the tracker to help identify triggers so you can prepare for them.

For additional help in quitting, schedule an appointment for individual counseling (offered through our Smoking Cessation Program) or other quit programs, such as the Connecticut Quit Line.
