A dirt path has developed from Garage 1 in to the Main Building Entrance. Please do not use this path for the following reasons:
1. It is not safe for you. The path is steep in places and many tripping hazards exist along the way, for your safety the paved surfaces should be used. Also crossing east road where there is no crosswalk is very unsafe.
2. The path will become more dangerous as the fall weather and less daylight come upon us. Breaking the habit of using it now will prevent accidents in the future.
3. It’s a detriment to the environment. The worn earth with no vegetation is prone to wash out that exposes the roots of the tress in one of the few wooded areas left on campus. With continued use, the path will develop into a rutted stream during rain events and continue to erode this area.
4. Alternate paved walks that are well lit with Emergency phones are available. The newly constructed paved concrete walk and the enclosed stair provides access to the University Tower entrance and in turn quick access to the all parts of the Main Building. This access will be even easier in late fall when the final connection corridor through the former ED area is complete.
5. Shuttle buses provide easy access to and from the Garage
6. Paving this area is very expensive. If we were to pave this path it would require intermediate stairs (because the slope is too steep for a legal sidewalk), new lighting and emergency phones.
As citizens and stewards of this campus, we all must take responsibility for our safety and the environment. We appeal to you to take this responsibility seriously and ask that you please use the paved walks.
