Time Commitment: Two sessions a week for 4-weeks. Each session will be approximately 2 hours.
Purpose: To learn how individuals adopt new gait dynamics in response to altered gait patterns. To accomplish this goal, we will use an instrumented split-belt treadmill, 12 camera motion capture system, and wearable sensors to measure joint motion and muscle function during an asymmetric walking protocol.
Participant Restrictions: Participants must have suffered a single, unilateral stroke at least six months prior and be between the ages of 35 and 75 years old. We are currently accepting participants that have no prior history of lower extremity injuries and have been cleared to return to walking by their physician. Participants will be excluded if they are unable to walk for extended periods of time.
Research Location: The research study will be conducted in the Human Performance Laboratory located in Gampel 104, in Gampel Pavilion on the UConn Storrs Campus.
Study Summary: Participants will be asked to wear spandex shorts and a spandex top for data collections. They will have the choice of supplying their own or borrowing a set from the lab. Before beginning, participants will be outfitted with motion capture markers and wireless EMG sensors. During the data collection they will perform walking trials. Some of the walking trials will be performed with asymmetric speeds between limbs (one treadmill belt will be moving faster than the other).
