HIPAA regulations and UConn Health policies require that you have a specific job-related reason to view or access patient information. This includes information in the Patient Lookup feature in Epic and axiUm.
Using the Patient Lookup feature to obtain a coworker’s phone number, birthday, or other information without a job-related need is considered snooping.
Do not search on any name in the patient lookup unless you have a specific work-related reason to do so. Searching by name and viewing the patient demographics on the patient lookup screen violates UConn Health Privacy Policies, is considered impermissible access to protected health information (PHI), and may result in disciplinary action.
