“Billion Oyster Project: Oyster restoration as a strategy for improving ecological and educational outcomes for public school students and the largest open space in New York Harbor”

After growing up farming oysters alongside his parents and siblings on the Fishers Island Oyster Farm, Peter Malinowski taught marine science and aquaculture at New York Harbor School and in 2010 became the school’s Aquaculture Program Director. Pete left the Harbor School in 2014 and became the Director of the Billion Oyster Project (BOP), a program of the New York Harbor Foundation. The BOP is now a city-wide effort to restore oysters to New York Harbor and connect New Yorkers to their Harbor by engaging them directly in the work of restoring live oysters. In the last few years, the BOP has restored over 25 million oysters, provides educational programs at 75 middle and high schools, and collects shells 80 restaurants in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Pete became the Executive Director of the Billion Oyster Project in the fall of 2017. Prior to joining Harbor School, he worked as a tall ship educator and deckhand at Ocean Classroom Foundation, and as a seasonal foreman at the Fishers Island Oyster Farm. Pete holds a B.A. from Vassar College, and is a Coast Guard licensed captain.
Lecture series is FREE and open to the public. Lectures begin at 7:30 p.m.
Please join us for our 22nd season. This annual lecture series attempts to span the breadth of human interactions with coastal waters, including speakers from the natural and social sciences. All lectures are held in the auditorium, which is located on the second floor of the Academic Building (disabled accessible). Enter through the Academic Building or through the Student Center. There is a limited-capacity elevator on the first floor of the Academic Building.
