The UConn Police Department’s Safety Techniques & Awareness Resource Team and the Off-Campus Student Services Office are working together to reaffirm our goal of providing the highest level of safety and well-being to the UConn community by offering a free-of-charge women's self-defense course.
The goal of the UConn Police START program is to offer an easily accessible education programs to our community. The Women’s Self-Defense Program was created to help women develop a foundation of basic self-defense and offers women viable options when confronted with various threats of violence.
This self-defense course, will run for 4 consecutive Tuesday nights starting Sept 27th, 2016: 5:30 - 8:45 p.m. through Oct 18th, 2016; each class starts promptly at 5:30 p.m and will be held in UConn's Shippee Hall, Pequot room located in the basement level. The first 3 classes are mandatory to complete the course while the 4th class, which allows students to take part in hands-on, simulated exercises, is voluntary. This comprehensive course progresses from awareness, prevention, risk reduction, and avoidance into basic physical self-defense exercises built for women, which lead to the simulation exercises. The course we are currently teaching women is build around the "R.A.D. For Women: Basic Physical Defense" system.
