First Church of Christ Congregational in Farmington, Connecticut was highly involved in abolitionism. In July 1839 La Amistad became the site of revolt when African captives from Sierra Leone (the Mende people) took control of the slave ship which was headed for Cuba. The ship was taken to America and became part of a landmark court case. During the Amistad Case in 1839, First Church of Christ Congregational housed several of the Mende people providing them with food, shelter, and clothing. The case was resolved by the Supreme Court in 1841 and the Mende people were taken back home.
