  • 12/10 Documentary Screening of Sister

Sister: An Intimate Portrait of a Global Crisis screens today, December 10th, at 6:30pm in LH101. 791 women die daily from causes related to pregnancy or childbirth with 2 women dying daily in the U.S. and 99% of maternal deaths taking place in the developing world. Up to 98% of these deaths are preventable. When and if a woman becomes pregnant should be a choice yet over 14 million girls give birth each year as a result of coerced sex and unwanted pregnancy. Access to healthcare and medical services is severely limited in developing countries with many providers lacking basic medicines, equipment or a reliable source of electricity. Sister tells the story of health workers from Ethiopia, Cambodia and Haiti, explores how they find meaning while working under difficult circumstances and reveals maternal and newborn death as a human rights issue. Join the discussion about reproductive rights and maternal health as human rights, view the documentary, and learn how you can help. View the film trailer here. Refreshments provided.
