School, Program, and Course Information

  • Are You Thinking About Withdrawing From a Class?

Are you thinking about withdrawing from a class this semester? If so, here are some things to consider before submitting an Enrollment Change form:

The deadline to withdraw from a course in the Fall 2026 semester is November 16, 2026 as published in the Academic Calendar. If your withdrawal request is approved, you will receive a W grade on your transcript, no credit will be given for the class and your W grade will not impact your GPA.

    Academic Considerations
Academic Progress and Grading: How are your grades in the course so far? Look at the syllabus to find out how the final grade is calculated. Talk to your professor or teaching assistant (TA) if you have any questions about your progress.

Time & Energy: Is this course impacting your ability to do well in your other courses? If you didn’t have this course on your schedule, could you do better in your other classes?

Program Requirements: Is this course a pre-requisite for any future courses or required for an academic program you plan to apply to? If so, when will it be offered again? Could withdrawing from the course impact your application or graduation timeline?

Academic Standing Requirements: Could your grade in this course affect your ability to remain in good academic standing?

Undergraduate students must maintain both a term and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 to remain in good academic standing. Graduate students must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. Some academic programs or majors may have additional academic requirements.

    Consult Your Academic Advisor!

All students should consult their assigned academic advisor when considering whether to withdraw from a course.

    Financial Aid Considerations

If you withdraw from a course after day 10, you are still financially responsible for the course. No tuition and fee refunds will be issued.

How does dropping a class impact Satisfactory Academic Progress?

Students must meet the requirements of the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy to maintain eligibility for financial aid.  Withdrawing from courses during the semester may impact your financial aid.  For information regarding the requirements, visit the website at https://financialaid.uconn.edu/sap/. Please contact One Stop Student Services at 860-486-1111 with any questions.

How does withdrawing from a class after the add/drop period impact my federal loan eligibility?

A student's annual federal loan eligibility is based on completing at least 24 credits at the Undergraduate level or 18 credits at the Graduate level between the fall and spring semesters. If a student withdraws from a course during the fall semester, they may not qualify for the full amount of loans offered for the spring semester. Credit requirements and additional information can be found at https://financialaid.uconn.edu/enrollment/ and https://financialaid.uconn.edu/one-big-beautiful-bill-act/.

There is no impact on private/alternative loans. Please contact One Stop Student Services at 860-486-1111with any questions.

    Other Eligibility Concerns

Will withdrawing impact my athletic eligibility?

If your enrolled credit load will be below 12 credits for undergraduate students or 9 credits for graduate students in Fall & Spring semesters, it may impact eligibility. Contact the Student Athlete Success Program (SASP) with any questions.

Will withdrawing from a course impact my Visa eligibility?

To maintain F-1/J-1 Visa Status, students must stay enrolled in at least 12 credits for undergraduate students, 9 credits for graduate students without a GA, or 6 credits for graduate students appointed as a GA. Contact the Center for International Students & Scholars with any questions.

    Withdrawal Process

How do I withdraw from a course?

For Spring and Fall semesters, students must submit an Enrollment Change Form within Student Admin to withdraw from a course.  This form will be routed to your advisor for review and approval. If you have not previously discussed with your advisor, you may receive additional outreach before the form is approved. If you are withdrawing from more than one course in a semester, the form will also be routed for review and approval to your Dean/Directors' Office. If approved, your course withdrawal request will be processed.

What if I decide to withdraw from all my courses?

For undergraduate students and non-degree students taking undergraduate classes, please contact the Dean of Students Office or your regional Student Services Office. For graduate students and non-degree students taking graduate courses, contact The Graduate School.
