    NEW COURSE FAll 2026-  Digital Media and Design class OPEN TO ALL MAJORS 
    Do you love movies? This class will be perfect for you!

    DMD 3660.  Women Make Movies.  (3 Credits)  
    Tues-Thurs 2-3:15pm, Professor Kelly Dennis
    Explores the history, form, and content of films directed by women and women-identified directors. Themes/genres explored may include documentary, chick-flicks, rom-coms, and such traditionally male-identified genres as Westerns, war, and sports films. Directors include historical and contemporary figures.
    Enrollment Requirements: ENGL 1007 or 1010 or 1011; (DMD 2010 waived this semester!); open to sophomores or higher.  

    Why do rom-coms get dismissed as “chick flicks?” Why don’t more women-identified directors make war movies? What happens when they do?

    Through a selection of films spanning multiple decades and genres, students will engage with both canonical and lesser-known works by female filmmakers. The course will also critically examine the challenges women face in the film industry, including issues of representation, gendered aesthetics, and systemic barriers to access and recognition.

    Films screened include: Desperately Seeking Susan, Barbie, Watermelon Woman, Marie Antoinette, Point Break, and The Matrix, among others
