Summer Courses
Summer Session 2 - (July 13 – August 14, 2026)
PUBH 5460-F01 Health and Human Rights 3 credits
(2215) UConn Health Farmington
This course explores the many ways in which human health and well-being are related to human rights. Human rights
are a field of international law that includes major treaties, treaty bodies, and adjudicatory mechanisms. This course
will review the ways in which human rights instruments and jurisprudence have addressed health and issues related
to health. Students will also study a wide range of substantive public health issues that have a human rights
dimension and consider the ways that human rights are used as advocacy tools to improve the structural
environment that shapes the public’s health.

PUBH 5497-F01 War, Conflict & Global Health 3 credits
(2217) UConn Health Farmington
This seminar explores global health challenges in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), focusing on the role of
structural factors like poverty, migration, violence, and armed conflict in shaping population health. Students will
analyze disease patterns, population changes, and the social and cultural influences on health, while evaluating
health interventions and systems in resource-limited and fragile settings. The course emphasizes both the direct and
indirect ways conflict and instability affect health outcomes and access to care. Through lectures, discussions, small
group activities, and data analysis, students will build skills in applying epidemiologic and biostatistical concepts to
global health issues, interpreting population data, and designing culturally suitable, evidence-based interventions.
Prerequisite: Intro to Epidemiology and Biostatistics I, or equivalent course.
