  • 4/1 Virtual Seminar: Stem Cell-Based Embryo Models

The UConn/UConn Health SCRO Committee is pleased to announce the second in a series of presentations on cutting-edge topics in the field of stem cell research. The Miller Brown Stem Cell Seminar Series has been named in memoriam of our colleague and SCRO member, Dr. Miller Brown, in honor of his more than a decade of service to the Committee and his many contributions during that time.

Stem Cell-Based Embryo Models: The 2025 Modified ISSCR Stem Cell Guidelines

Human embryo development is an area of research that is significant for its potential to contribute to our knowledge of human health, disease, and reproductive processes. However, our knowledge of the stages of early human development is currently limited in part due to ethical concerns surrounding experimentation with human embryos, and because the development of animal embryos differs from the process in humans.

In recent years, techniques to create stem cell models of embryo structures have become increasingly sophisticated. These models, known as human Stem Cell-Based Embryo Models (SCBEMs) are lab-grown stem cells that form structures that mimic early embryo development. Although human SCBEMs lack full developmental potential, they can be utilized to research many aspects of early human development. At the same time, their use raises important ethical and regulatory considerations.

Internationally accepted guidelines for use of these models were initially published by the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) in 2021, and in response to recent and rapid progress in the development of these models, the guidelines were revised in 2025. The ISSCR guidelines are intended to help guide the deliberations of researchers, oversight committees and other relevant stakeholders, and ensure continued public confidence in stem cell science.

Janet Rossant, Co-Chair of the ISSCR Embryo Model Working Group and ISSCR’s Stem Cell Reports Editor-in-Chief will speak about the updated ISSCR guidelines for embryo models this Wednesday, April 1. We invite you to join us for this virtual talk and stay for the Q&A session that will follow.
